Black and white copying can be done from either the flatbed glass or the automatic document feeder, and the MFC-8860 can be used as a stand-alone copier, meaning it does not need to be connected to a computer to perform this function. Originals can be reduced to 25 percent and enlarged to 400 percent in 1 percent increments. When it is time to replace the Brother MFC-8860 toner, the TN550 cartridge yields approximately 3,500 pages, while the high-yield TN580 cartridge can produce up to 7,000 pages.

Faxing is done via a 33.6K bps fax modem at a rate of approximately 2 seconds per page. The MFC-8860 is caller ID and distinctive ring ready and has a capacity of 340 auto dial locations and redial capability. Up to 600 pages can be stored in memory, so documents will not be lost in the event of a paper shortage. In addition, faxes can also be duplexed.
